Susumu Yamaguchi was born in Nagano prefecture. He had studied western art as a student of Kuroda Seiki at the Western Painting Institute of Tokyo. Yamaguchi joined the circle of Sosaku Hanga artists. He experimented a lot with new woodblock techniques. As he could not make a living from his prints - as all Sosaku Hanga artists before the war - he worked as a high school art teacher. After 1945 he moved to the country side in Nagano prefecture. Yamaguchi's favorite print subjects were mountain landscapes.
