Hokusai Katsushika, 1760-1849
Hokusai was entirely posessed by the art of Ukiyo-e and worked until his death. His greatest masterpieces are the 46 pictures of the 36 views of Mt. Fuji. It took him 10 years to complete this series. Hokusai was a prolific artist with about 30,000 different prints in all. Like the great composer Beethoven, he was a restless man. He changed his residence 93 times during his lifetime - according to his own biography.

"Hokusai Manga" has been one of the best known e-hon books in Japan. The each volume contains interesting, often whimsical sketches and illustrations of various subjects. It has been regarded as the first publication of the very popular "manga" genre.
According to Jack Hillier, "Although no two translations of the word manga exactly coincide, we know perfectly well what it means from the archetype of all manga, Hokusai Manga. It means a multitude of drawings of a lively, sketch type, often presented in numbers on a single page, without any special order or intent, except to amuse and entertain...".
