Hiroshi Abe was born in Asahikawa city in Hokkaido. He worked for Asahiyama zoo in Asahikawa city from 1972 to 1997. After his retirement, he became a popular illustrator for books. He received many major book illustration awards in Japan such as Kodansha shuppan Bunkasho, Sankei Jido Shuppan Bunkasho JR-sho. Akatori Sashi-e sho. Shogakukan Jido Shuppan Bunka sho.

Hiroshige ANDO  -  1797-1858      Stations of the Tokaido

Hiroshige was born as the son of a fire warden. He started his career as a woodblock engraver. Hiroshige's fame is based on his landscape designs. Famous are his prints of the Tokaido, a kind of highway system in ancient Japan connecting Edo and Kyoto. Hiroshige produced more than 30 series on the Tokaido. His compositions were influenced by Western art. After his death his prints had a great impact on French impressionism.

Hokkei was originally a fishmonger. He learned the craft of printmaking as a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai and was considered to be one of his best followers. His work consists of many illustrations and surimono (privately commissioned prints for such occasions like New Year's greetings for friends and relatives).

Junichiro SEKINO  -  1914-1988      Master of Sosaku Hanga

Junichiro Sekino was one of the leading figures of the Sosaku Hanga movement. After World War II he won wide recognition in the USA. In 1963 he taught at the Ohio State University and in 1965 at the Kobe University in Japan. The style of Junichiro Sekino has a large variety - from realistic to semi-abstract.

Katsue INOUE  -  born 1932

Katsue Inoue was born in Niigata prefecture. She studied oil painting with Shinsei Fukuda and woodblock printing with Makka Munakata. She is active in design of package and screens. Her works are usually large decorative images of flowers with children and birds in black and white. Member of Banga-in from 1967.

Keisuke SERISAWA (SERIZAWA)  -  1895-1984

Keisuke Serizawa was enormously talented master of "Katazome" stencil-dyed printing and a leading member of "mingei" folk art movement. His distinctive designs and method were carried on by the two famous pupils, Sadao Watanabe and Yoshitoshi Mori. Keisuke Serizawa was awarded Living-cultural-treasure status by Japanese government in 1956. Later, two museums were built in honor of his works.

Kishio KOIZUMI  -  1893-1945      100 Views of Great Tokyo in Showa

Kishio Koizumi was the son of a former retainer of the Tokugawa clan which had ruled Japan until the end of the Edo period. Koizumi had studied painting and woodblock carving. He became an active member of the Sosaku Hanga movement. In 1920 he created a series of 12 prints, "Sceneries of New Tokyo". From 1928 to 1937 the artist designed and carved the series "100 Views of Great Tokyo in Showa" (meaning the Showa period). Before his death Kishio Koizumi had worked on a series of "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji", which he could not finish.

Kiyoshi NAGAI  -  1911-1984

Kiyoshi Nagai is maybe better known under the name of Hiroyuki Tajima (see 'Modern Japanese Prints' by Frances Blakemore). The artist was born in Tokyo and had studied Western painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He started with woodblock prints in 1946. Kiyoshi Nagai used the name Hiroyuki Tajima for his more abstract, modern prints and Kiyoshi Nagai for figurative landscape prints. His usual edition size was 50. He took part in the International Tokyo Print Biennale and was a member of the Japanese Print Association (JPA).

Kogyo TSUKIOKA  -  1869-1927      Noh Theater

Kogyo Tsukioka studied with Taiso (also Tsukioka) Yoshitoshi whose name he took. Later he studied with Ogata Gekko. The artist specialized on the depiction of Noh theater scenes. His most active period was around the turn of the century.
