Tomikichiro Tokuriki is one of the members of the Sosaku Hanga movement. He was born in Kyoto where he attended the School of Fine Arts and Crafts. After World War II he established his own publishing company, Matsukyo Publishing Company. Tomikichiro Tokuriki was a passionate Sosaku Hanga printmaker. However he earned his living with prints in Shin Hanga style. Today everybody knows him for the Shin Hanga style prints published by Uchida and Unsodo.

Toshi Yoshida was the eldest son of Hiroshi Yoshida. Like his father he undertook extensive travels all over the world. His trips took him to the U.S.A., Canada, India, Africa, Australia and even to the Antarctica. Most of his print subjects are focused on landscapes or animals depicted in a realistic style. After the death of his father Hiroshi Yoshida, he even experimented in abstract art for a while but returned to realistic landscape prints.

Toshiro Maeda had studied business administration and later became a self-taught artist. In the beginning of his artistic career he earned his living as a commercial artist. From 1950 on he was an established artist and exhibited in Paris and Mexico. He created a series "100 views of new Japan".

Toyokuni was the son of a sculptor of puppets. His favorite subjects were beautiful women at the beginning of his careeer and later actor prints. He was a highly appreciated printmaker in his time and made the Utagawa school famous. His pupils later rivaled to adopt their master's artist name. His best-known students were Kunisada and Kuniyoshi. Kunisada who later called himself Toyokuni (he is referred to as Toyokuni III) eventually became head of the Utagawa School.

Umetaro Azechi was born in Uwajima in Ehime prefecture on the island of Shikoku as the son of poor farmers. As a young boy he wanted to become an artist and began with an art course by correspondance from Tokyo. He went to Tokyo and got a job delivering newspapers. Later he was supported and encouraged by Unichi Hiratsuka. After World War II he became famous and his prints are in the collections of such renowned museums like the British Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. Umetaro Azechi was an avid mountaineer and many of his subjects show mountaineers and mountain landscapes in his typical style of simplified forms and flat colors.

Yoshiiku was the son of a tea house proprietor. Together with Yoshitoshi he attended the printmaking school of Kuniyoshi. From this time dates a life-long rivalry with Yoshitoshi whom the young Yoshiiku bullied at school. In his time he was a popular newspaper illustrator.

Yoshitoshi is considered to be one of the greatest artists of the Meiji era. He started his career as a pupil of Kuniyoshi. Yoshitoshi produced a number of famous print series during his lifetime - the most famous ones being the '100 Aspects of the Moon', series about beautiful women and his ghost series. Until his early fourties, the artist's life was a struggle for financial survival. Only in his late years he found public recognition and commercial success. Yoshitoshi suffered from depression and mental illness and died at the age of 53 from a cerebral hermorrhage.

Yuji Hiratsuka was born in Osaka, Japan. In 1985 he moved to the United States. Since 1992 he has been teaching printmaking at Oregon State University. His graphic work has been exhibited in the Americas, Europe and Asia and has received numerous awards in national and international competitions. His works are in The British Museum, Tokyo Central Museum, Museum of Modern Art in New York, New York Public Library and many others.
