Ansei UCHIMA  -  1921-2000

Ansei Uchima was born in Stockton, California. The work of Ansei Uchima reflects a complex fusion of Western and Eastern artistic traditions. Uchima traveled to Japan at age nineteen, and after World War II studied painting and traditional Japanese printmaking. While he was a translater for Oliver Statler for his famous book about the Sosaku Hanga artists, he became interested in Sosaku Hanga.
He returned to USA in 1959. Uchima was an esteemed woodblock print artist, painter, and fine arts professor, as well as Emeritus faculty member at Sarah Lawrence College, where he taught from 1962 to 1982. Uchima also taught at Columbia University to 1982. He received Guggenheim Fellowships in 1962 and 1970, and his work is included in permanent collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, National Gallery of Art, British Museum among many others.

Bakufu Ono was born in Tokyo. Favorite subjects are landscape and natural scenes - among them a series "Great Japanese Fish Picture Collection" - 72 fish prints published between 1937 and 1942.

Chikanobu TOYOHARA  -  1838-1912      Modern Traditionalist

Chikanobu had studied under Tohohara Kunichika whose surname he took. Favorite subjects are historical scenes, female images and prints showing emperor and empress Meiji in an environment that documented the rapid progress in adopting Western technology and customs. Chikanobu had adopted some Western styles and techniques, but his subjects were rather retrograde.

Eiichi KOTOZUKA  -  1906-1979      Kyoto Artist

Eiichi Kotozuka was born in Osaka and studied at Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. He made several series with famous landmarks in the Kyoto area and flower prints. Publishers were Unsodo and Uchida from Kyoto. In 1948 he was among the founders of Koryokusha company with Tomikichiro Tokuriki, Kamei Tobei and Takahashi Tasaburo. Koryokusha was founded to support Sosaku Hanga prints with money earned by the Shin Hanga print activities of Tokuriki Tomikichiro.

Eisen TOMIOKA  -  1864-1905      Kuchi-e

Eisen Tomioka was born in Nagano prefecture under the name of Hidetaro. He went to Tokyo to study drafting and was employed by the army as a civilian. Later he resigned from the army and became a full time illustrator. Most of his works were illustrations for newspapers, journals and books - called kuchi-e.

Gekko OGATA  -  1859-1920      Painter, Printmaker and Lacquer Artist

Gekko Ogata worked as a painter, printmaker and decorator of pottery and lacquerware. His favorite subjects were genre scenes from everday's life. During and after the Sino-Japanese war he produced a considerable number of war prints. Gekko won several prizes at exhibitions. His print style reminds more of paintings than of traditional woodblocks. Gekko's designs required great skill by the carvers and printers.

Hanko KAJITA  -  1870-1917      Kuchi-e Printmaker

Hanko Kajita belongs to the generation of Meiji artists who earned their living mainly with kuchi-e, frontispiece illustrations of popular novels published by newspapers. At the turn of the century Kajita had established his own private school in Tokyo. He had great influence on the younger generation of artists and trained artists like Maeda Seison, Togyo Okumara and Kokei Kobayashi. Hanko Kajita died at the age of only 41 of tuberculosis.

Hideaki KATO  -  born 1954      Prints in Silkscreen Technique

Hideaki Kato was born in Kyoto, a city characterized by a long tradition of arts and handicraftmanship. He had originally studied biology, but turned to arts under tuition of his father Yuichiro Kato and as a self-taught artist. Hideaki Kato adopted silk screen printing as his preferred technique and after 1982 began to publish his works with Uchida.

Hideo TAKEDA  -  born 1948

Hideo Takeda was born in Osaka. In 1973 he graduated from Tama University of Fine Arts in Tokyo with an M.A in sculpture. The artist considers himself more a cartoonist. In the International art scene Hideo Takeda is one of the best recognized contemporary Japanese artists. The artist uses a large variety of different styles or with his own words 'It is my belief that having no specific style is my own style". He received "Bungei Shunjuu" prize for his manga in 1976. In 1992, he had the first manga solo-show in the British Museum.

Hiroshige ANDO  -  1797-1858      Stations of the Tokaido

Hiroshige was born as the son of a fire warden. He started his career as a woodblock engraver. Hiroshige's fame is based on his landscape designs. Famous are his prints of the Tokaido, a kind of highway system in ancient Japan connecting Edo and Kyoto. Hiroshige produced more than 30 series on the Tokaido. His compositions were influenced by Western art. After his death his prints had a great impact on French impressionism.
