Liu Chunlai is a young artist who caught our attention for wonderful large-format landscapes. Design and colors are reduced to a minimum. Nevertheless, the result is breath-taking. Liu Chunlai demonstrates an old principle of Chinese art: Less is more.
The artist was born in 1966 in Heilongjiang, China's most Northern province. He graduated from the Fine Art Department of Harbin (Ha Er Bing) Teacher Training School. Presently the artist lives in Beijing and works as a professional painter and printmaker. He is married to Zhao Tianqi, a successful printmaker like himself.
Liu Chunhai's landscapes are a product of his Northern homeland, where the average temperatures in January are from -31 to -15 Celsius. He shows vast landscapes, often in harsh winter, covered by heavy snow. And amidst his landscapes are either human beings or animals. They are always depicted small in size compared to the huge space occupied by the landscape. And they look very lonely and fragile.
One can virtually feel the cold with Liu's winter landscapes. And a strange mood lies over the whole scene - like for woodblock prints by the great Japanese master Hasui Kawase. Liu Chunhai achieves the effect with a combination of reduced designs, the selection of the right colors and by placing these tiny, lonely beings amidst the landscape - Hasui did the same.
The art works of Liu Chunhai are in the possession of Hong Kong Goldlion Co., Ltd. and the International Movie Centres of Hai Nan, China. Private collectors from the U.S.A., Japan, the Czech Republic, France and Hong Kong appreciate the artists works.
Liu Chunlai works in traditional Chinese woodblock technique and in silkscreen. The editions that we encountered so far, were small from 2 to 20 copies. All prints were signed, dated and numbered by the artist.
