Forum > Articles > Chinese Prints > Li Yitai - born 1944Li Yitai practices the old Chinese technique of water printing with woodblocks. The technique is about 300 years old and requires a lot of skill. For water prints the paper must be moistened before the color is applied. It produces an effect like a watercolor and it looks very Chinese. BiographyLi Yitai was born in Shanghai in 1944. He began to study at the Zhejiang Fine Art Academy in 1956. After his graduation he stayed at the Academy where he has taught untill today. He is professor of the Zhejiang Fine Art Academy, vice president of the Zhejiang printmakers association, and a member of the Chinese Art association. In 1980, his artwork Lu xun was chosen to be shown in the exposition of Chinese painting art, which was organized by the U.N.. This exhibition was shown in several places all over the world. Two years later in 1982, the same artwork was chosen to be shown at the renowned Salon au Printemps in Paris. In 1984, his artworks "March in Lower Reaches of Yangtze" and "Fishnet" were chosen to attend the International Print Exposition in Ljubljana. In 1986, "Lakefront" was chosen to attend the "International Peace Year Exposition", again organized by the U.N.. And finally Li Yitai's artwork "Wishes" was chosen to attend the International Print exposition in Portland, where it was awarded with a prize. CollectionsSeveral print sets by Li Yitai are in national Chinese museums. Five prints titled "On the side of Jialing river" are in the collection of the British Museum.
