Guan Housheng is a leading artist from the North-East province of Heilongjiang, an important 'Art School' known as 'Beidahuang' (vast barren land). It is next to Yunan, in the South-West, a leading center for the arts of printmaking. Guan Housheng works in the traditional woodblock technique. His print works have won several prizes of the annual National Art Exhibition and the National Print Exhibition. The artist's works are in the collections of the China National Art Museum and the London based Muban Foundation.

Art Training and Affiliations

Guan Housheng was born in 1948 in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province. In 1986 he completed a printmaking course at China Academy of Fine Arts. Housheng is member of the "official" Chinese art associations:

• China Artists Association
• China Printmakers Association
• Artists' Association of Heilongjiang Province

The artist has the rank of a First Grade State artist. At present he holds the position of Director of Printmaking Creation at the Harbin Arts Institute.

Printmaking Techniques and Styles

Guan Housheng works in the technique of reduction woodblock prints. All blocks are of course self-carved and self-printed. The artist prints with oil-based colors.

The typical edition size is from ca. 50 to 100. All prints that we encountered so far, were signed, numbered and dated.

Exhibitions and Awards

• 1980 - "Birds Singing in the Forest" was selected for the 2nd National Youth Art Exhibition, and won the third prize.
• 1982 - "At the Spring Festival" was selected for the 8th National Print Exhibition, and won the prize of excellence.
• 1984 - "Golden Village" was selected for the 6th National Art Exhibition.
• 1986 - "Old Sunflower" was selected for the 6th Print Exhibition of Heilongjiang and won the golden prize.
• 1989 - "Fall Sacrificial" was selected for the 7th National Art Exhibition, and won the silver prize.
• 1994 - "Song of Autumn" was selected for the 8th National Art Exhibition.
• 1999 - "Dancing in the Fall" was selected for the 9th National Art Exhibition.
• 1999 - Guan Housheng's artwork was awarded with the Luxun Prize of the National Printmakers' Association.
• 2000 - "Red Bud" was selected for the National Prints Biennale Exhibition of Qingdao, China.
• 2001 - "Fall Sacrificial" won the achievement prize of Heilongjiang Retrospective Art Exhibition.

During his lifetime Guan Housheng won the first prize of the Art Exhibition of Heilongjiang Province seven times.
