Guan Housheng is a leading artist from the North-East province of Heilongjiang, an important 'Art School' known as 'Beidahuang' (vast barren land). It is next to Yunan, in the South-West, a leading center for the arts of printmaking. Guan Housheng works in the traditional woodblock technique. His print works have won several prizes of the annual National Art Exhibition and the National Print Exhibition. The artist's works are in the collections of the China National Art Museum and the London based Muban Foundation.
Guan Housheng was born in 1948 in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province. In 1986 he completed a printmaking course at China Academy of Fine Arts. Housheng is member of the "official" Chinese art associations:
The artist has the rank of a First Grade State artist. At present he holds the position of Director of Printmaking Creation at the Harbin Arts Institute.
Guan Housheng works in the technique of reduction woodblock prints. All blocks are of course self-carved and self-printed. The artist prints with oil-based colors.
The typical edition size is from ca. 50 to 100. All prints that we encountered so far, were signed, numbered and dated.
During his lifetime Guan Housheng won the first prize of the Art Exhibition of Heilongjiang Province seven times.
