Kunihiro Amano is a leading Japanese artist of the second half of the 20th century. The designs of his woodblock prints are figural, semi-abstract or abstract compositions in geometrical or natural forms. Many of the artist's images have - more or less visible - sexual symbols integrated.

Associations

The artist is member of the Japanese Print Association and of Kokuga-kei.

Technique

Kunihiro Amano works in traditional woodblock technique. A typical edition size from the 1960s or 1970s is 50 copies, of later works 120 copies. There are limited editions and open editions exist.

  • 1960 - 2nd International Young Artists Exhibition in Paris, France.
  • 1963, 1965, 1967, 1969, 1971 - 5th to 9th International Print Biennial in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia.
  • 1964 - Prize award at 8th International Print Biennial in Lugano, Switzerland.
  • 1966, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1974 - 1st to 5th Krakow International Print Biennial, Poland. Prize awards at the 1966 and 1968 exhibitions.
  • 1967 - 9th Sao Paulo International Exhibition Biennial, Brazil.
  • 1968 - Award at 2nd Pistoia International Print Biennial, Italy.
  • 1968, 1970, 1972, 1974 - 1st to 4th Bradford International Print Biennial, England.
  • 1969 - Award of 1st prize at 5th Xylon Woodblock Print Exhibition, Switzerland.
  • 1970, 1972, 1974 - Buenos Aires International Print Biennial, Argentina. Prize Award in 1974.
  • 1970 - Grand prize at International Woodblock Print Biennial in Banska Bystrica, Czechoslovakia.
  • 1972, 1974, 1976, 1978 - 1st to 4th Norwegian International Print Biennial, Norway.
  • 1972, 1974 - 2nd and 3rd International Drawing Biennial in Rijeka, Yugoslavia. Grand Prize Award in 1974.
  • 1972 - First Prize Award at 1st Philippine International Print Biennial.
  • 1972, 1974, 1976, 1978 - Frenchen International Print Biennial, Germany. Prize Award in 1974 and 1st Prize in 1976.
  • 1978 - First Prize at Listowel International Graphic Art Open Exhibition, Ireland.
  • 1978 - International Drawing Biennial in Christchurch, New Zealand.
