Zhou Lu can be regarded as a representative of an art style called "Cynical Realism" - unique to contemporary Chinese art of the years after 2000. On this page we represent four new prints in his series of bald-headed children.
The artist Zhou Lu is one of my favorites among the contemporary Chinese printmakers. His art works are witty, sophisticated, creative and on a high level of technical skill. And Zhou Lu has another character that I appreciate very much. He not only comments his own art works. His statements are even understandable for everybody and they make sense. This makes him a rare exception among artists who either keep their mouth shut (sometimes a good choice) or who express themselves in flowery and wishy-washy statements that no normal human can understand.
The prints shown on this page were ordered directly from the artist on special request by a client in Australia. Therefore they are currently not available for sale.
If you are interested in acquiring prints by Zhou Lu, please contact me. We are in direct contact with the artist since 2006. The whole series has in the meantime grown to more than 50 prints and was published in a magnificent art book - see below.
One of my personal, great wishes is to stage a huge solo auction of the complete series, respectively the titles that are still available. But I am afraid that artelino clients are not yet prepared for that. A pity. I do not know of any other contemporary Chinese works on paper that document the "Zeitgeist" of China of the later 90s and the years after 2000 so poignant, in such a wide range and so rich in all its facets than this awesome print series by Zhou Lu does.
I am personally convinced that one day art critics and historians will praise this series as a landmark in modern Chinese art. I would even go further: this series will one day be a cult icon for the art of the early second millennium.

The following statements are by the artist and were only slightly edited by artelino.
"The print Communication shows how in one special moment reality exchanges with fiction."
The print My Show is based on a popular television program of the same title. It shows in this stage self-expression and profiling.
"Sitting in Lotus shows a copy of oneself. Man has two aspects: good and bad. They can both exist together. Lotus is a symbol of Buddhism."
"Flower of Evil wants to demonstrate that people must get away from the blooming lusts, far away from the Flower of Evil. In this way, we can achieve serenity of our hearts."
"The children in my artworks are just an indication. Children's simplicity is what we, the adults hide and laugh at. But from the deep of our heart, we cannot give up this simplicity. It accompanies us during all of our life."
We produced a little video with a short introduction to the art of Zhou Lu.
