The females in Zhong Yao's paintings often have long necks, noses and limbs. These bodies look kind of elongated. These fragile figures remind me of Pablo Picasso's early works from his blue and rose period. But Zhong Yao's images do not have the depressing tristesse of Picasso's early works. How could they! These women are not in distress, but they are 'looking forward'. Or is the title 'Looking Forward' just a bit ironic?

Zhong Yao, born in 1967 in Liaoling Province is from the Xibo ethnic minority. She works as a painter, illustrator and writer. In 1990 she graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Luxun Fine Arts Academy. From 1998 until 2000 she attended the Master Degree class of Tianjing Fine Arts Academy.
Since then her paintings have participated in many exhibitions. But she also known for her poems, essays and illustrations. In 2006, she held a solo exhibition titled 'Personal Oil Painting Exhibition by Zhong Yao' at Hong Zi Lang Gallery in Beijing.
Her expressionist style paintings reflect her personal feelings about life which are deeply related to her female and minority ethnic identity.
