The art print titled 'Fang Fang' by Zhang Biao is one of One Hundred Chinese Master Prints selected by artelino

"Fang Fang" is the name of Zhang Biao's little daughter. When he made this art work, she was 7 years old.
The print has been accomplished with photo realistic perfection. Fang Fang is placed on a chair against a dark background. Rays of light coming apparently from different sources like in a photo studio illuminate the scene. The sharp contrast of light and dark shadows creates a peculiar mood. It is hard not to be captivated by this image.
We received this and several more copies of 'Fang Fang' as an etching. But I think that it is some kind of mixed media with aquatint and some photomechanical process. But this is of secondary importance. What counts is the final image that the viewer can see.
'Fang Fang' is also a synthesis of old, traditional Chinese painting and of Western tradition of putting the individual into the focus of attention. Between 'Fang Fang' and the faceless masses of posters and paintings made in the era of Mao Zedong are only 30 years of time difference.
