The art works of Mr. Yang Yongsheng, a leading Chinese painter and printmaker, are influenced by the Tibetan culture. Together with his deceased teacher and other colleagues from Qujing Art Institute in Yunnan, he undertook several journeys to Tibet. Since 2006 he has lived in Hawaii, U.S.A., where he makes his master degree in fine arts at the printmaking department of Hawaii University as a fellow of the Ford Foundation.

The photgraph shows the travelling group of artists from Qujing Art Institute during their first journey to Tibet. Among them was also Yang Dehua, teacher and friend of Mr. Yang Yongsheng. During the travel, the group made sketches and photographs which were later transformed into rich paintings and prints showing the life and culture of the Tibetan people.

The artist, Mr. Yang Yongsheng, in front of a Tibetan Mani stone. The theme of the Mani stone can frequently be found on the artist's paintings of this and subsequent periods.

Reduction Woodblock Prints by Yang Yongsheng

In Hawaii Mr. Yang Yongsheng started a series of reduction woodblock prints with mystic themes influenced by his experiences with the Tibetan culture and religion and its people and by his own roots that lie in the Autonomous province of Yunnan/China.

At Work in his Studio in Hawaii

The technique of the reduction woodblock print is said to have been invented first in Yunnan. Since then it has spread all over China and is now also used by Western printmakers.
