Mr. Yang Dehua passed away in 2002 - by far too early - after a long period of disease and hospitalization. The artist had worked at Qujing Art Institute in Yunnan as a painter and printmaker and art teacher for the younger generation of artists. His painting and printmaking philosophy and figurative style had been formed under the old political era of social realism. During the last decade of his life, Yang Dehua had developed a passion for the culture and people of Yunnan and China's western provinces like Tibet. The artist exhibited regularly in China's top level art exhibitions and received awards at these art shows. His works were shown in several countries including the United States of America (New York) and are in many major museums in China.

Born in Kunming, Yunnan

Yang Dehua (1940-2002) was born in Kunming, Yunnan province. He graduated from Sichuan Art College in 1965 and became an artist of Qujing Art Academy. He was a National Class 2 artist, a member of Chinese Artists Association, Chinese Printmaker Association, a member of Yunnan Artist Association and a member of Yunnan Oil Painting Committee.

His works were often selected to participate in national art exhibitions. Yang Dehua was awarded the bronze prize in the 10th National Printmaking Exhibition (the most important regular printmaking show in China), the bronze prize in the national art show to mark the 50th Anniversary of "the Speeches Made at Yan'an Artistic Seminar", the silver prize in the 11th National Printmaking Exhibition, and the "Luxun Printmaking Prize" for Chinese excellent printmaking artists in the years 1980-1990.

Collections

Yang Dehua's art works were collected by several art institutions such as the Art Museum of China, Beijing International Art Gallery, Nationalities Cultural Palace, Heilongjiang, Jiangsu, Ningxia, Sichuan, Guizhou Art Museum.

The works of Mr. Yang Dehua together with a brief biography were recorded in "the Yearbook of Famous Chinese Artists in the World". In 1993 and 1995 he held his individual art expositions at the Art Museum of China and at Beijing International Art Gallery. His works have been exhibited and collected in many countries and regions like the United States, Japan, Singapore, Canada, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Invited by American South Seas Art Center, he exhibited in the United States in 1996 at the International Art Exposition in New York.
