In July 2007 we received from our Chinese agent a number of inexpensive but stunning art prints created by young talented artists who recently graduated from a Chinese art academy. One of these emerging young "baby boomer" artists is Xiao Fuping.

Education and Training

Xia Fuping was born in 1985 in Changzhi city of Shanxi province. He graduated from Printmaking Department of Fine Art Academy, Hunan Science and Technology University.

The young artist won the golden prize of the National Art Exhibition in Commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Lu Xun's death. A selection of photographs and artworks was shown at the 5th National Art Exhibition for University Teachers and Students.

Xiao Fuping uses unusual titles for his works. We present two woodblock prints, "?! No. 1" and "JQ Time", both created in 2007.

The image shows a little girl who dropped out of school because her parents could not afford to send her to school. In spite of his youth, the artist Xiao Fuping tackles a social-critical subject.

The edition size is only 8. The print is very large with an image size of 23.6 inches = 60.0 cm by 29.5 inches = 75.0 cm. It was printed on a thick, solid Chinese paper with oil-based colors.

JQ is a Chiense abbreviation of Ji Qing, meaning "time of passion". The print shows a worker, a farmer and a soldier. During the period under Mao Zedong, they were the center of Communist propaganda.

The edition size of this woodblock print is only 10. Image size is rather large with 23.6 inches = 60.0 cm by 35.4 inches = 90.0 cm.
