In my view Waichi Hayashi is one of the best contemporary Japanese printmakers. But outside of Japan he is little known. This page is meant to contribute a bit to convincing art friends that Waichi Hayashi is a real "find".
The images on this page are link-sensitive and take you to other articles or web sites in which you might be interested.
Waichi Hayashi was born in 1951 in Shizuoka prefecture. In 1974 he graduated from the Department of Japanese Art at Kanazawa Art and Crafts College. The artist is active in woodblock printmaking and in ceramics.
Waichi Hayashi is one of the quiet artists - the type of artist who is seriously devoted to his art and nothing else. In order to be become well-known to a large and (preferably) international audience, artists must "blow the trumpet" or have someone who does it for them - usually one or more galleries who represent the artist and thus have an interest to sell the works well.
Waichi Hayashi has a web site, but it is in Japanese. He does not speak English. He is a member of different Japanese artist associations - Shunyo-kai, Nihon Bijutsuka Renmei-kai (Nihon Artists League) and Hamamatsu Bijutsu Kyokai (Hamamatsu Art Association). But we have never seen him in a catalog of the annual CWAJ Print Shows - at least not over the last years.
Waichi Hayashi uses the old traditional Japanese woodblock method. In my view his prints are mesmerizing. I appreciate his compositions and his daring, yet balanced color combinations. In my view, Waichi Hayashi is best when he experiments with lights in his images.
The message of art cannot be conveyed well by words. You must use your eyes and your heart. Therefore we have prepared a small selection of the artist's woodblock prints on this page.
