This simple but pleasing abstract rug looks like a contemporary new design. It is not, but made after an old Tibetan design. The use of abstract, geometrical patterns is one of the surprising facts about traditional Tibetan rug designs.

Tiger Rug

The vivid depiction of an awesome tiger sneaking through a bamboo forest. Tiger rugs are a very special genre within the field of Tibetan carpets. Until the late 1970s tiger rugs were practically unknown outside Tibet/Nepal. In 1979 the first tiger rug was brought to the U.S.A. and bought by the Newark Museum. Tiger rugs were reserved for the Tibetan nobility and for the monasteries. They are a symbol for strength and power.

If you have Mimi Lipton's book available, please compare this design with the book reference to appreciate the great work done by the designer and the weaver of this unique piece. Call it art or call it arts and crafts. In any case it is a gorgeous work. We recommend to read the book titled Tibetan Tiger Rugs by Mimi Lipton, entirely devoted to the subject of tiger rugs.
