Ted Colyer was born in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1947. He graduated from Mount Allison University in Canada and went to Japan to learn traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking from Toshi Yoshida. Ted Colyer was one of several Americans who had come to Japan to be trained by Toshi, the eldest son of Hiroshi Yoshida. Others were Sarah Brayer, Joshua Rome, Micah Schwaberow, Carol Jessen and presumably others that I do not know of.
Ted became one of the Western artists in Japan that American gallery owner, dealer and collector Michael Verne began to present and introduce to the American public in the 1980s.
Her remained in Japan as a professional printmaker and painter for 17 years before he returned to Canada in 1988.
Ted Colyer works either in traditional woodblock technique as he had learned it by Toshi Yoshida or in some kind of mixed media. He also uses a lithograph technique that he calls CEAHD. He explains this technique on his official web site at Ted Colyer.
If we are not mistaken, Ted Colyer has exhibited with the annual CWAJ print shows for 18 years by the time of the publication of this article.
The art prints shown here have all been sold in our online auctions and are to be found in our archive of Japanese prints.
