The images were taken by our Chinese consignor partner at the home of Tai Liping, a leading artist of the popular Chinese folk art print - known in the West as New Year prints.

Please read our biography of Tai Liping and take a look at his artwork on the Tai Liping gallery page.

After one color was applied - here in the example the yellow - the prints are hung for drying on a simple but effective concoction.

After the rebuilding of printmaking in the little village of Fengxiang, more than 340 designs are now available - old ones, but also newly created designs. The art of the Chinese folk print is alive in Fengxiang.

Tai Liping's Mother

The mother of Tai Liping stands in front of the large entrance gate which is typical for old Chinese houses. Each gate wing is decorated with a door god print to guard the house and ward the evil spirits off.

On outer doors like on this photograph, the prints were exposed to the weather. Therefore they were (and still are) renewed once per year. This happened shortly before the Chinese New Year festival in January. This is the reason why the prints were named New Year prints in the West.

We at artelino prefer to call them Chinese folk art prints. As their use was not restricted to the time of the New Year, a wider expression is more appropriate.
