From Painting to Traditional Woodblocks

Shufu Miyamoto was born in 1950 in Fukuoka prefecture. He studied oil painting under Ioka Osamu. When he began creating art prints, he first used the techniques of silkscreen and lithography. Later Shufu Miyamoto changed to the old Japanese technique of woodblock printing.

Shufu Miyamoto has established himself well with landscapes made in woodblock technique. His style reminds somewhat of impressionist paintings. Shufu Miyamoto's works express romantic feelings and a sense for moods created with the means of compositions, colors and last but not least the mastering of a superb craftsmanship. His specialities are the display of water, mist and hazy athmosheres.

Woodblock Prints in Limited Editions

The intricate nature of Shufu Miyamoto's woodblock prints requires not only a high level of skill but the creation is also a time-consuming process. For each color, the artist has to carve a separate block. And the intensive use of gradations (in Japanese: bokashi) is difficult to achieve. His woodblock prints therefore are not cheap. Edition sizes are typically from 100 to 200.
