Born in Manchuria

Toko Shinoda was born in Manchuria as the son of a tobacco manufactor. Already as a child she was trained in calligraphy.

After world war II she began to create abstract works. Her reputation and fame grew fast. Today her art works are in the permanent collections of the best museums in the world like the Moma in New York or the British Museum.

Print works are only a part of her oeuvre. Shinoda Toko uses lithography as her preferred printing medium. Anything else would probably not work well with her style of making art works. Like in calligraphy she uses brush strokes that she applies spontaneously on the plate. Often she hand-colors each lithograph copy afterwards. Thus each sheet has an individual touch. The edition sizes of her print works are small, usually not more than 50 copies.

Poetry has been another passion of Shinoda Toko since her childhood. Her works carry titles like "Serenity", "Ancient Dream", "Beyond" or "Quietude". Basically the art of Shinoda Toko is in bringing a certain state of mind on paper or canvas with a few brush strokes.
