Qujing is the place well-known as the "Hometown of Cuan Culture" for the two famous stone tales "Cuanbaozi" and "Cuanlongyan" and the source of beautiful Zhujiang River. And there is a group of artists who have been working hard year after year to present people with their artistic fruits reflecting their deep feeling for the land. They are the artists of Qujing Printmaking Institute.
Qujing Printmaking Institute was established in 1991 on the basis of the original Art and Photo Studio and Art Research Institute of the Cultural Bureau. Currently, there are 8 resident artists who graduated from art universities and have sound qualities and a solid educational foundation. They often live with the common people on close terms and are influenced and thus cultivated by the land with its rich natural and human resources.
Although it is less than ten years since the establishment of the institute, some artists have made their great contributions in their productive thirties. It is the mystical red earth that frequently spurs their inspiration and motion of artistic creation.
With the expectation of this beloved land, they have achieved great success in these ten years. Many of their works have won gold, silver and bronze prizes in the national artistic events and printmaking exhibitions.
There are several printmakers who have won the "Luxun Print Prize". About 40 works have been collected by the Chinese National Art Museum, Beijing International Art Museum and several provincial and municipal art galleries. About 100 works have successively been exhibited in several countries and regions like United States, England, France, Canada, Japan, Holland, Singapore and Taiwan. Many of them have been collected by overseas art galleries and institutions.
In 1993, Qujing Printmaking Institute successively held "The Exhibition of Art Works of Six Artists from Yunan" with 146 works of prints and paintings in the Chinese National Art Museum. The exhibition found much attention of the artistic circles in Beijing. In 1995, invited by Beijing International Art and Literary Circles, the "Exhibition of Qujing Strong Colored Painting" was held in Beijing.
In recent years, instead of resting on their laurels, the artists have cast their insights into broader areas. For instance, how to get rid of superficially hunting for novelties, and to reveal instead deeper spiritual insights? How to determine modern artistic standard and come out of the distorted regional, ethnic and traditional areas? How to proceed with artistic individual achievements on the basis of the word and native land? It is a purely new subject that now faces the artists.
Today, the artists of Qujing Printmaking Institute display their works in different places and consult their counterparts from home and abroad. There is always a mountain beyond a mountain, a sky beyond a sky. But they will embrace a more brilliant tomorrow with their consistent love of life and art.
