Edutainment > Oda Mayumi - born 1941
Oda Mayumi is an exceptional Japanese female artist.
She has enriched the world of Japanese prints with images
of voluptuous female nudes drawn with large breasts, hips
and thighs. The unusual images have found a positive
resonance from art collectors and art critics. Her
works are in famous museums like the Moma (Museum of
Modern Art) in New York. Oda Mayumi, born in Tokyo, now
lives in Hawaii.
Education
Oda Mayumi was born to a buddhist family in Tokyo.
She graduated from Tokyo University of Fine Arts
in 1966.
The following two years she studied at Pratt Graphic Center in New York.
The artist has exhibited worldwide - mostly in the USA and in Japan.
Oda Mayumi is one of the Japanese artists who took her permanent
residence in the USA. Currently she lives in Hawaii.
Oda Mayumi is strongly interested and involved in environmental and in peace
issues. She has played an active role in the protest against atomic test and
atomic energy.
Style
The artist is known for her images of voluptuous
women with large breast and large hips and upper thighs. Often the arms and
legs are drawn in tiny prportions which only underlines the curvaceous character
of Oda Mayumi's women.
Sometimes the women are displayed as goddesses. It is a reference to
her Buddhist background. And it is Oda Mayumi's way to underline the
strength and power of women. She uses flat areas as in old Japanese
ukiyo-e. The images are
whimsical and witty. Oda's women never look ridiculous or mean. And although
her style may seem childlike, nothing of her works has any
childish character. The artist's style has often been compared
to the works of the great French expressionist
Henri Matisse (1869-1954).
Oda Mayumi kept her favorite subject, the nude female body, over the
years. But in her later works, like in her "Garden" series, the bodies
have normalized dimensions. The distortions have nearly disappeared.
Techniques
The artist works mainly in the medium of silkscreen, but also in
Japanese stencil and other techniques. Her prints are
mostly large to middle sized and printed on a soft, pliable paper.
A typical edition size is 50.
