Kawase Hasui began his career as a woodblock printmaker rather late. His teacher Kiyokata Kaburagi first refused the application of the then 26 year old Hasui. But one year later he finally accepted him and soon recognized the talent of his student.
By mediation of Kiyokata Kaburagi Hasui met Watanabe, a Tokyo print publisher. Watanabe began to give commissions to Hasui. The two men became life-long friends. Most of Hasui's prints were published by Watanabe.
