Kiyoshi Kobayakawa was a contemporary of shin hanga artists like Hasui Kawase or Ito Shinsui. He specialized in prints of beautiful women. Thus he followed the tradition of the 'bijin' genre of the 18th and 19th century on one hand. But his images are a break with tradition by showing a new type of modern women who are dressed after the latest Western fashion, smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol.

Kiyoshi Kobayakawa was a student of Kiyokata Kaburagi. He worked in Shin Hanga style. The woodblock prints of the artist were either self-published or created in cooperation with the publishers Hasegawa, Watanabe or Ensedo. Kiyoshi Kobayakawa's art prints took part in the second exhibition of Japanese prints in Toledo/USA of 1936.
Overall little is known about the life of the artist. And even his total print works are something that still has to be researched.
Kiyoshi Kobayakawa is known for designs like Tipsy or Geisha Ishimaru.
In October of 2009 we received a number of woodblock prints by Kiyoshi Kobayakawa that we had never seen before. Here is a selection of these designs.
