The prints by Ito Yuhan are admired by art aficionados and collectors of the shin hanga movement. But hardly anything is known about this artist.
The images on this page are link-sensitive and take you to other articles or web sites in which you might be interested.
The standard book reference for Japanese artists, active between roughly 1900 and 1975, is the "Guide to Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints" by Helen Merritt and Nanako Yamada. When you search for information about an artist and you do not find anything in this book, you know that your research becomes difficult:
"Act. 1930s. Published by Nishinomiya Yosaku. Landscape prints of Miyajima printed in soft blue tones."
More can be found at Hanga Gallery, a commercial web site with reference information on Japanese prints - mainly from the shin hanga art movement:
"Ito Yuhan (1882-1951) was a landscape artist who designed several woodblock prints during the 1930's. His work was published by Nishinomiya Yosaku. According to one source, Yuhan worked as a movie producer in later life, but this is unconfirmed. He is best known for designing several views of Miyajima printed in blue tones. His prints are characterized by vivid colors and subtle gradations. They look similar to watercolors, as they lack an outlining keyblock.
We at artelino like the colorful and atmospheric prints by Ito Yuhan, and want to share with you these beautiful images.
