Postcard Sizes and Mini Formats by Kawase Hasui

Smaller sized woodblock prints by Kawase Hasui come roughly in a postcard size or a mini format plus some size variations. They are commonly referred to as postcard sizes.

These designs show all landscape themes. As most of the Hasui prints in regular oban size, also most of the small postcard sizes were published by Watanabe. But one can find Hasui designs in postcard size also by publisher Bijutshusha.

The subjects were often taken from the regular oban size designs. But also new designs were created.

Postcard Sizes from the Muller Collection

The Hasui small format landscape prints had been well-known before. With the huge collection of shin hanga that came into the market after the death of dealer and collector Robert O. Muller in 2003, also larger numbers of postcard size prints by Hasui were made available for the market. As they had been stored over decades and never been framed, they were usually in excellent condition and well accepted by collectors worldwide.
