Guo Chongye is a printmaker from Zhenghe County, Fujian Province. He taught himself painting and printmaking by imitating and mastering the techniques and works of colleagues and master printmakers. His works, usually with scenes from rural and farm life, have been shown in Fujian as well as throughout China and have won him many prizes.

Guo Chongye was born in October 1943 in Zhenghe County, Fujian Province. Guo Chongye was already interested in painting as a teenager and he taught himself by studying the works of previous masters and later that of colleagues, as well. This self-taught artist has worked diligently for over 40 years on improving his work, always asking for advice and criticism with an open mind, producing thousands of works.

Of all the various painting styles, Guo Chongye is largely interested in oil painting, watercolor painting and gouache. His works have been shown in Fujian and other provinces and they have won many prizes. His works often deal with rural themes and touch the heart with their truthfulness and simplicity.

Although his pictures appear simple and common, they are unforgettable for their charm and the subtle poetry. They sing of home, the land and the love of the people of the countryside, creating a feeling of yearning for the hometown.

  • 1984 - "Green Mountain Never Old" was awarded second prize on the Tryout Competition sponsored by Jianyang Culture Bureau for 6th National Literary Works Exhibition.
  • 1984 - "Kiln Smoke of Barren Hill" was awarded the third prize in the District Art Works Exhibition sponsored by Jianyang District Administrative Office of Fujian Labor Union.
  • 1986 - The movie poster "Clear Mountain Stream" was awarded the third prize on Movie Publicity Picture Creation sponsored by the Fujian Provincial Movie Company.
  • 1991 - The watercolor picture "Mountain Road to Far Places" was awarded the third prize in the "Painting and Calligraphy Festival" sponsored by Nanping District Culture Bureau and was selected to be shown in the "1st Provincial Painting and Calligraphy Festival".
  • 1996 - The watercolor picture "Dam Head" was awarded the second prize in the 1st Provincial Water Conservancy and Water Power Art Festival sponsored by Fujian Provincial Water Conservancy Department.
  • 1999 - The watercolor "Under White Rock" was awarded the third prize in the 1st Nanping Culture and Art Festival and was selected for the 3rd Fujian Calligraphy and Painting Art Festival.
