Fumio Fujita is a major artist of Japanese post-war woodblock printmaking. During more recent years his reputation has suffered in my view by stereotype, repetitive images of white-bark trees. This may have built a wrong image of the artist. In reality his works are quite diverse and full of creativity.

Somehow Fumio Fujita has been poorly managed during his later years in my view. The same design of white-bark trees and woods published in different colors, and each color in different sizes. It gives a wrong impression. One should rather look at the complete works by Fumio Fujita which are by far more diverse.
Fumio Fujita was born in Aichi province, and graduated in 1955 from the renowned Musashino College of Fine Arts. In 1963 he began to make woodblock prints in moku hanga style - self-carved and self-printed.
His main subjects are landscapes with a focus on trees. This subject has become trendy among Japanese printmakers since another artist, Joichi Hoshi, became famous by making practically nothing else but images of trees.
Fumio Fujita exhibits regularly with "Kokugakai", a Japanese printmaker association. He had several solo shows in Tokyo and exhibits every now and then with the prestigious CWAJ print shows (College Women of Japan), which was established by Oliver Statler after world war II.
The artist works exclusively in woodblock prints. By September 2009 we had more than a hundred sold prints by Fumio Fujita in our archive of Japanese prints. Among them are also nice views of Mount Fuji and even one cute cat print.
Fumio Fujita is pretty good in integrating the design of a print with the natural grain pattern of the wooden block. This can be seen very well for instance in the design of Cat (A).
