Chikamatsu Manzaemon, 1623-1724, was a famous playwright - first for the Kabuki theater and later for Bunraku, the Japanese puppet theater. Chikamatsu is sometimes referred as the Japanese Shakespeare.
Here is the complete series illustrated.
These Japanese woodblock prints popped into the market a few years ago and were offered for pretty high prizes in the beginning. Prices came down after the market showed signs of saturation. Demand for the different designs and thus prices vary considerably.
The female images are still in high demand like Heroine Umekawa by Tsunetomi Kitano. Others are offered for low prices like Lady on Veranda by Tatehiko Suga. And others are completely undervalued like Lady in Chinese Costume by Suisho Nishiyama.
Most of the prints available are in good condition (The Heroine Koharu by Keigetsu Kikuchi often comes with discolorations on face and hands.).
