His style varies from modern to folkloristic, but his colors are always bright and fresh. The artist seems to have a liking especially for blue and red colors.
Chen Long was born in 1971 in the Northeast of China. In 1993 he began to study at the Graphic Art Department of the Central Arts Institute of China. After graduating from Central Arts Institute, the artist remained connected to his homeland in Bei-Da-Huang province. Its people and landscape became the favorite motif of his prints and paintings.
In 1958 ten thousand men of the Chinese army were sent to Bei-Da-Huang (Heilongjiang province) to transform the huge and practically unpopulated wastelands into farmland. They were later followed by ten thousands more. These young people were pioneers and the experience of the first settlers shaped the following generations.
Chen Long, born 1971, is from the second generation of the Bei-Da-Huang pioneers.
Most of the artist's works are made in the traditional woodblock technique. Editions are from 50 to 100 copies - signed and numbered by the artist.
Chen Long takes his subjects from the vast plains of his native homeland in the Northeast. He uses brilliant colors - especially when he depicts the nomad people with their herds or the local people at harvest work.
Many of his prints reflect a feeling of the vastness of the plains. Chen achieves this effect with some smart "tricks". He frequently choses long horizontal formats, and sometimes he shows the horizon with a slight bend.
Chen Long comments his own works and the influence of the Bei-Da-Huang region on his style as follows (edited by artelino).
"The color in the North of China is white and cold. But the people who live there, are passionate. They like to drink, dance and sing. In their hearts life is hot and colorful. That is why I use fresh colors in my artworks."
