Mr. Chen Kai is a young artist from Yunnan province in China. When we received the first woodblock prints by him in 2007, he worked at Qujing Art Institute. Style, subjects and technique of Chen Kai are in the tradition of what has become known all over the world as Yunnan Art School.
Chen Kai was born in Fuyuan of Yunnnan province in 1971. In 1995 he graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Yunnan Art Institute. Currently (2007) he is a resident artist of Qujing Printmaking Institute and a managing director of Qujing Fine Arts Artists Association. The young artist is currently a national artist of grade three. And he is a member of Yunnan Fine Arts Artists Association.
His works have been collected by the Sichuang Fine Arts Museum, Yunnan Fine Arts Museum and the Orgnizational Committee of the 2nd Chinese Fine Arts "Jingcai Prize".
Mr. Chen Kai works in the tradition of his homeland Yunnan. Yunnan is the place where the technique of the reduction woodblock print is said to have been invented in the 1980s. This technique is different from the traditional woodblock print. The creation process of a reduction woodblock print ends with the ultimate destruction of the block. The technique has become very popular among Chinese printmakers, and mainly in Yunnan province.
The young artist chooses subjects that have made Yunnan printmaking famous all over the world: the beautiful Yunnan landscapes, picturesque villages and beautiful women from the ethnic minorities in Yunnan. The print "Puritanical Girl" is characterized by flat areas without any light or shadow effects as we know it from Japanese woodblock prints. The patterns used remind of the style of Vienna Secession and Art Nouveau.
Mr. Chen Kai uses oil-based inks which he applies in thick form and in strong colors. The edition size is small as usual for contemporary Chinese printmakers.
