Azechi Umetaro is well known in Japan as a writer of several books about mountaineering. Internationally he is well-known as one of the leading Japanese artists of post-war Japan. His woodblock prints in bold colors and shapes are appreciated by collectors and art friends all over the world.

  • 1925 - Employee of government printing bureau in Tokyo.
  • 1925 - Studied woodblock printmaking with Hiratsuka Unichi.
  • 1927 - Nihon Sosaku Hanga Kyokai Exhibition.
  • 1931 - Kokugakai Exhibition.
  • 1932 - Member of Japan Print Association.
  • 1936 - The Scenes of Iyo published.
  • 1940 - Kokugakai Prize.
  • 1943 - Member of Kokugakai.
  • 1954 - Sao Paulo International Print Biennial.
  • 1957 - The 1st Tokyo International Biennial Print Exhibition.
  • 1957 - Exhibition Paris, France.
  • 1959 - Exhibition Chicago, USA.
  • 1965 - Solo exhibition Santa Maria, California, USA.
  • 1976 - Honorary member of Japan Print Association.
  • 1985 - Cultural Prize, Ehime Prefecture, Japan.

  • 1998 - Honorary citizen of Machida City.
  • 1999 - Died April 12 in Tokyo at the age of 99.
