Description Book illustration (Sashi-e) for "Genji Monogatari" (The Tale of Genji) which was written by Lady Murasaki-shikibu in the Heian Period. The novel chronicled the life of prince Genji and the people around him in the court. Countless stories, films, poems and paintings have been made after this classic masterpiece of Japanese literature.
Signature Hiroshi.
Dated 1912.
Publisher Bun'en-do.
Medium/Technique Woodblock print.
Impression Very Good.
Colors Very Good.
Condition Very good ... Paper toning, slight foxing and discolorations on the margins.
Note Bun'en-do was active from the late Meiji era until right after W.W.II. It was famous for the high quality art and literature books. Unfortunately, they lost many of their inventories and key-blocks during the Kanto Earthquake in 1923. Printer Nakamura.
