Title Eihei Temple - Striking Temple Bell

Artist Akio Onda born 1924
Description Priest at Eihei-ji Temple strikes the large temple bell. Eihei-ji (temple of eternal peace) was founded by priest Dogen in 13th Century near Fukui City. It is one of the two head temples of Soto sect of Zen Buddhism which still strictly practice Shikan-taza ("just sitting")form of Zen. .
Signature "Onda Akio" in pencil on the lower margin.
Seal Artist's seal.
Dated Late 20th century.
Medium/Technique Woodblock print.
Impression Excellent - very good ... (self carved and self printed) printed on a very thin, translucent Japanese paper (kozo).
Colors Excellent ... (inked from the reverse side. Some of sosaku hanga were made in this way).
Condition Very good ... naturally irregular edges and wrinkles usual for this type of paper, the lower margin creased.
Note Akio ONDA was one of the best students of Shiko MUNAKATA. He was an assistant of Munakata while he taught woodblock printing at Musashino Art Collage.
