The curious rock formations and the neatly raked white pebbles represent the abstract Zen universe. Physicist, writer Dr. Bean Porter remarked about the garden, "... I have found the rock garden of Ryoan-ji to be the best that I have ever seen. The garden dates back five hundred years and is a beautiful poem; a fine statue; a deep philosophy; a wonderful picture; a magnificent architecture; a lovely music and a profound religion". |
