Title Sakurada Gate
Artist Masao Maeda 1904-1974
Description "Sakurada mon". Sakurada-mon gate of Chiyoda palace in Tokyo. Despite the peaceful outlook on this print, the gate was the site where the assassination of Ii Naosuke by Mito Samurai group occurred. Ii Naosuke (the Great Councillor of the Tokugawa Shogunate) was the man responsible for opening Japan to the West for which he was assassinated at Sakurada-mon Gate on a snowy morning in March, 1860.
Signature "Masao Maeda" stamped on the lower margin.
Seal Masa.
Dated Ca. 1964.
Medium/Technique Woodblock print.
Impression Very good.
Colors Very good.
Condition Very good ... Light toning, slight brown stains on the right margin. Ink stains on the margins.
