Title Insect Cage
Artist Utamaro Kitagawa 1750-1806
Description Utamaro was very much interested in insect but in this picture, there was no insect in the cage. What is unique in this picture was that a cloth looking like Chinese or Indian cotton was used for the background... a bold experiment that no other Ukiyo-e artists dared. Against the dark arabesque backdrop, he depicted a natural beauty in light summer kimono.
Signature Utamaro.
Dated Originally in Edo era. This re-carved edition was made in 1974.
Publisher This re-carved edition by Takamizawa.
Medium/Technique Woodblock print.
Impression Excellent - very good ... (re-carved).
Colors Excellent ... silver colored metallic pigment.
Condition Excellent - very good ... left lower corner creased.
Note "Takamizawa Tadao kanshu, Showa 49 nen saku" stamped on the back, carver Kikuta Kojiro, printer Sato Kanjiro. This print comes with an explanation in English and Japanese.
