| Title | Goddess Benten |
| very rare, early work by Utamaro | |
| Artist | Utamaro Kitagawa 1750-1806 |
| Description | Benten, one of the Seven Lucky God and Goddess. She is playing "biwa" (Japanese Chinese style lute) and a guest is dancing with an ogi fan. The ogi fan has a blind printing (very light and difficult to see on this print) of a character, "Maro", as for Utamaro. A kamuro is holding a tray of auspicious objects and another lucky symbol, crane, is flying down from the sky. A beautiful courtesan is in the plush living room. Benten is possibly the famous Edo publisher Tsutaya Eizaburo, as the feature is similar and indeed he was a "Lucky God" to Utamaro. |
