Title Long Life vs. Short Life
Artist Fusatane Utagawa active ca. 1850s-80s
Description "Inochi Yousho Zen-aku Kagami" On upper cartouche, two plants in Chinese "inochi" (Life) character, grow and represent the life cycle. The one on the right bears fruit of "expanding second stores" and "grand children". Left one indicates "mistress" and "being rich". The wealthy but old man harvests them. His assistants are literally "cooking books". The lower cartouche depicts a young couple under "inochi" character as umbrella. They apparently decided to live a short and exciting life. The tombstone indicates, "Yabo Chomei Hi" (The Memorial Stone for the Long but stuffy Life).
