| Description |
14 prints depicting the heroes and heroines in the battles of Genji-Heike clans. Female warrior Tomoe Gozen, Soga Brothers, Taira-no-Koreshige and demon, etc. Among the story depicted; (The Marksman) During the fierce battle at Sanuki, at the sunset, a small boat was paddled out from the Heike camp. A pole with a fan attached was elected on the boat. A Heike court lady signaled to the Genji warriors if anyone could shoot down the fan. Since the Genji had reputations of their great archery skills, they could not turn down this challenge. The Genji general appointed Nasu-no-Yoichi for the task. The boat was tossed around up and down by the sea wave and the target was very small. Yoichi rode his horse in the water and aimed his arrow. The both sides of the camps watched silently. Among the rising tension, Yoichi finally released the arrow. The kabura-ya travelled in the air with its characteristic booming sound and separated the fan from the pole exactly at the fasting point. Both Sides spontaneously gave him thunderous applause. And thus, Nasu-no-Yoichi recorded his name as one of the great archers in the Tale of Genji-Heike War. |
