| Description | From Chikanobu's very popular series, "Shin Bijin" (True Beauties). It is perhaps a day in the later summer. A girl in kimono with various insects and autumn plants is holding a glass bowl containing a gold fish. ----------There was a wide spread interest in the new definition of "true beauty" during Meiji era. This series, in which Chikanobu depicted women in various societies and age groups, seemed to offer the definition of beauty in each of women engaging different activities in everyday lives. Chikanobu perhaps wanted to suggest a viewer could find the "true beauty" in any of them. |
