Title Battle of Gojo Bridge - Benkei and Ushiwaka
Artist Chikanobu Toyohara 1838-1912
Description Famous fight between Ushiwakamaru (Later, known as Minamoto Yoshitsune: Played by kabuki actor Onoe Kikugoro) and Benkei (left: played by Ichikawa Sadanji) on Gojo Bridge. Asides from the scenes in the military affairs in Meiji era, or in kabuki plays, Chikanobu seldom produced traditional warrior genre prints.
Signature Yoshu Chikanobu.
Dated Ca. 1880 - 1890s.
Medium/Technique Woodblock print.
Impression Good.
Colors Very good ... Silver - mica on the sword.
Condition Good ... Lightly soiled, wrinkled, red ink lightly bleeding. margins, few ink stains on print, minor creases and wrinkles on print. Full size. Not backed.
