Title Warriors Exchange Verses at Koromo River
  full size
Artist Chikanobu Toyohara 1838-1912
Description Famed samurai warrior, Hachimantaro Yoshiie (front) chased down Abe no Sadato at Koromo River. Yoshiie shouted at Sadato the first part of a verse, "Torn into shreads is the warp of the cloth" (Koromo no tate wa hokorobinikeri). Sadato turned around and completed the verse as, "Since age has worn its thread by use". Yoshiie was quite impressed by this answer, he let Sadato go. When he was asked the reason of his strange behaviour, Yoshiie replied that he could not kill the enemy who had kept his mind while hotly pursued by his enemy.
For the samurai warriors, combat was not solely a matter of brute force; it was also an intellectual engagement.
