Description It looks like the grandmother/mother-in-law is either consoling or ask the wife of the dead officer to control herself. They have obviously just received the death message of the husband.
A soldier is committing seppuku suicide in the round inset.
Eisen TOMIOKA was a very popular illustrator. It was said that the magazines with kuchi-e by Eisen were sold much better than the ones without Eisen's kuchi-e.
Signature Mosai.
Dated Ca. 1900 - 1910s.
Medium/Technique Woodblock print.
Impression Very Good.
Colors Very Good ... Burnishing.
Condition Very Good ... Light toning. Slight foxing.
Note It is extremely rare to find a kuchi-e without the usual folds. This kuchi-e was never mounted into a book or magazine.
